Safety
Safety is an extremely important part of FIRST. Safety precautions shouldn't just be followed during the competition - they should be followed whenever your team is building your robot.
Safety Checklist
- Have you read the FIRST Safety Manual?
- Have you watched FIRST's safety videos?
- Who is your safety lead?
- Are you wearing your safety goggles?
- Are you wearing work gloves?
- Are you wearing earplugs?
- Are you wearing close-toed shoes?
- Is any loose clothing tied back or removed?
- Do you know where your team's first-aid kit is located?
- Do you know where the nearest fire extinguisher is?
- How about the nearest fire exit?
- Do you know how to safely use the equipment?
- Is the equipment in good condition?
Make Safety Fun!
- Get safety goggles in your team's colors.
- Use a plastic engraver to etch your team's number or your name into your safety goggles. It will make them easier to find, too!
- Set your team's goal for "Safety Points". Add points for compliance and subtract points for violations. If your team reaches your goal by the end of the build season, celebrate with a pizza party.
- Set up an individual competition for safety ideas or concerns. Assign points to those who submit new safety ideas or address safety concerns with suggested remediation. Those with the most points at the end of the season get a free lunch!
